Chapter Twenty-eight
Owen raced down the rutted, packed dirt track that led away from Thomâs place deep in thought, not really noticing much as he bumped along through the dappled sunshine. He was relieved to reach the main road, which was paved, because it meant that he could drive quite a bit faster. It was a straight shot, passing Victoriaville to the west, with only two shorter turns into the surrounding bush once he neared home. His mind wrestled with how he might spin what had just transpired between himself, Thom, and Carol, given all the possible outcomes. He really wasnât sure how to approach Christine Twospeak, wasnât even sure if she could be trusted to go against her own sister, and found himself really hoping that Morgan might be of some help in that regard. He hated to drag her into this mess, but he reasoned that at least some of the probable confusion could be attributed to her foreignness. And, she had certainly involved herself with Thom of her own volition. To be fair, it was doubtful she had had any clue what she was getting into. Owen considered briefly, then, the idea that Thom had pulled Morgan into his scheme, too, but dismissed it outright. Not possible.
When Owen finally pulled into the long packed dirt drive of his own house, he noted the presence of a small dusty red coupe warily. He didnât recognize the vehicle at all, and felt trepidation about who might have descended on Morgan in his absence. He got out of the Land Rover, unlocked the front door, and stepped inside cautiously. He heard Morgan speaking softly in her bedroom, the sound drifting from her open door. He thought he heard the timber of a manâs voice, too, but it was too soft to know for sure. He stepped quietly toward the doorway, but was stopped in his tracks by a telltale mechanical click. He held his breath, and shifted his weight back onto his rear foot, feeling along the wall for his own bedroom doorway.
In a quavering voice, Morgan called, âOwen?â
So theyâd heard him. His first response emerged in such a whisper that he had to clear his throat and try again.
âAre you all right?â he asked.
Joseph leaned out from her doorway unexpectedly, causing Owen to jump. The former scout inclined his head to beckon Owen in, then disappeared back into Morganâs room. When Owen entered, Joseph and Morgan were sitting on the trunk at the end of her bed. Morgan held a handful of bullets in her trembling hands, and Joseph sat with a pistol in his, showing her how to load it. Morgan looked anxious.
âWhatâs this?â Owen demanded. âWhatâs happened?â
Joseph said calmly, âI think Morgan should be able to look out for herself if sheâs going to be out here alone so often.â Owen weighed this for a moment.
Morgan weakly explained, âIâm not much of a gun person.â
Joseph eyed Owen. âThere werenât as many windows in here, so I thought...â
Owen interjected, âJoseph, maybe you and I should talk for a minute.
